I do not think I had this wonderful chance to have one great source of inspiration or mentor. It is still fair to say that I have always admired my grand mother who is a researcher in biology, and whose meticulous passion and love for reflexion/discussion inspired me.

I’d say it’s my computing teacher in secondary school. Computing wasn’t really part of the standard curriculum back then, but the school did have a small computing club ran by the teacher. The club wasn’t even an official club, just a bunch of us doing our own thing. Each week he will set us programming problems to solve, which was challenging but I’d get a kick out of solving the problems. He was always there to help if we run into difficulties, but mostly just left us to try and explore things.

Um, when I was a child, I didn’t think of doing research. At that time, I was more keen on becoming a doctor, lawyer or a business woman, as those are the characters shown more on the TV, they always dressed up in pretty outfits and helped people with very important stuff. Then I got into university, studying Engineering Science – not very aligned for my childhood dreams, but a more reality choice as I am doing more well in science than art. At university, I had my first inspiration figure. He was my master research project supervisor, Steve. He is so knowledgeable, kind and passionate about very cool things. I just want to become something like him and do stuff like he does. As a result, I applied for PhD and here am I.
At the end, I wanted to say, it’s totally okay if you don’t feel like you have a clear idea about what you want to do. We have an entire life to find out. Also, it is equally okay if you want to do more than one thing or your dream changes. It’s your life and you decide what to do and the person you want to become. Good luck!
