Machine Learning Zone

Machine Learning is a fast-growing area of research involving a wide range of fields and affects everyone’s lives, whether they know about it or not! It’s about the ethics, legal aspects, software, and human effects surrounding machines that can spot patterns in data and learn to do things like predict accidents, recognise objects, and even suggest what TV shows you might like. It’s not just about software and robots – researchers from law, ethics, neuroscience and maths, as well as engineers and computer scientists, are all fascinated by machine learning.

In the Machine Learning Zone, students will CHAT to researchers working on things like how to make sure robots don’t crash into each other when they can’t talk to each other, why human brains are so good at learning, the ethical issues of robots working in hospitals and health care, and making computers that can learn to spot patterns in genetic data and predict what diseases someone might be at risk from.

What is Machine Learning?

This video from Oxford Sparks explains a bit more about what machine learning is. It was developed by researchers from the University of Oxford, including Yee Whye Teh, who is taking part in the Machine Learning Zone.
