The problem with reading so much is that I have so many favourite books…
When I was in school, my favourite books were Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, Oryx & Crake by Margaret Atwood, and the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman. Can’t wait for The Book of Dust.
I also discovered a really awesome new writer this year: Ada Palmer. She’s a history professor and she writes science fiction (her first book is called Too Like the Lightning, the next is called Seven Surrenders).
I also tell everyone whenever I can to read Anne Frank’s diary before you leave school, if you can.
So many! I loved Brideshead Revisited when I was younger. When I was a teenager, I loved The Dark Is Rising series, Dianna Wynne Jones, Alan Garner, John Wyndham – lots of fantasy stuff. Anne of Green Gables. Then I started liking Russian literature – Chekhov, Turgenev – and American stuff like F Scott Fitzgerald. I love On The Road. Now I’m very keen on Ian McEwan, Iris Murdoch, John Le Carre, and AS Byatt.
My favourite recent book is Being a Beast by Charles Foster. It’s an incredible account of his attempts to understand animals by living as one. It’s funny and insightful, beautifully written.
