Question: Why did Walter come back to England to train as a officer?

Being an officer is a bit different to being a Corporal or a Sergeant – you have to be very cool under pressure, and this can take training and practice. It was normal for those who had shown strong leadership potential in the lower ranks to go back to England to train as an officer. Good officers were always in short supply during the war.
