When I look at other places, it seems like they do strange rituals – walking across hot coals, or bathing in rivers. But I think our own culture is the most interesting, because we don’t think it’s strange.
For Christmas we bring trees inside our house, and put stars on top of them, and leave our milk for Santa, and wake up extra early. For our birthdays we set fire to a cake and chant around it. We give each other ribbons and pieces of paper when we do something good (like win an award).
That we think this is normal is the most interesting part of my research, and because we’re blind to our own rituals, this is the most interesting culture to study (for me).
