      He worked as a slave on a sugar plantation when he was a child, but because he was so young he probably did small jobs and errands rather than working in the fields.

      As an enslaved person Equiano had to do whatever his owner wanted him to do. One of Equiano’s first owners was an officer in the British Navy and so Equiano had to go to sea and he served during the ‘Seven Years War’ against France. One of his jobs was to carry gunpowder to the ship’s canons. It was dangerous work and Equiano saw people standing near to him killed by gunfire from French ships. He was lucky to survive.

      Sir Arthur first worked as a clerk in the colonial government administration. So he would read and write documents to help the government run.
