An infantry officer leads a number of men in an infantry battalion – infantry is what we think of as the ‘normal’ soldiering job, carrying a rifle and hand grenades in to action. The lowest rank as an officer is 2nd Lieutenant, then Lieutenant – either of these ranks may see an officer like Walter leading around 50 men in to action, this would be his platoon to command.
