      He was never a slave. He was born in 1915, 82 years after the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire in 1833. It is almost certain that older relatives of his would have been slaves at some point, which puts into perspective how close the period of slavery is to our modern world today. British subjects in the colonies were paid a wage when he was alive, but it was often at subsistence levels (enough to just live on).
